Historic Walks Volunteers

Tuesdays, 5 - 7pm: CoolWalks is CoolTan Art’s local historical walk programme, run by trained volunteers and staff

CoolWalks is CoolTan Art’s local historical walk programme, run by trained volunteers and staff. It has been offering regular historic and cultural walks in South London for over ten years. These off-the-beaten track walks are well attended by local residents, tourists and members of the public.

As a CoolWalks volunteer, you’ll receive training in how to research, promote and deliver a professional Coolwalk. You’ll learn more about the history of Southwark, and explore areas which interest you, in order to develop and reveal London’s hidden stories from your own perspective. Walks are run as a group, lasting around 2 hours, and take place mostly around Southwark and Lambeth.

Volunteers will develop a range of transferable job-ready, professional skills, working as a group to confidently play your part in CoolTan’s walks programme. It provide individuals with the opportunity to play a vital part in these much-loved walks.

Volunteers will develop:

  • Leadership – research skills & walk guiding
  • build confidence including performance skills
  • explore strategic thinking – basic enterprise skills, marketing, publicity, organisation & customer service
  • work at team building and monitoring
  • Have the opportunity to gain certifiable skills in Mental Health First Aid, First Aid, Safeguarding and Disability awareness.

Recent walks include:

A Tale of Two Sisters: Mary Wollstonecraft’s London

In Lambeth’s Furnace: William Blake’s South London

Beautification and Bermondsey: Legacy of Ada Salter

Availability: Tuesdays, 5 – 7pm for weekly Volunteer Group meetings

Walks take place once/twice a week on weekdays, evenings and weekends (usually Tuesdays or Saturdays but sometimes on Friday afternoon or evening)
