The Dickens News – A heritage newspaper created by CoolTan Arts participants and published in partnership with the Southwark News is now available as a digital publication.

The Dickens News is an original 8 page newspaper examining the relevance of Dickens’ work to today and brings to life and contemporises the characters created by Dickens. Articles, poetry and illustration explore Dickens early years in the local area of Southwark and compare and contrast society and social issues in Dickensian and modern day London.

The Dickens News: The Underground Edition Private View – A Review with Pictures

The Underground Edition continues until 23rd June 2013 at the Charles Dickens Museum, 48 Doughty Street, London WC1N 2LX.

Thursday 21st February saw the formal launch of The Underground Edition – the last show in our Dickens News exhibition series, an investigation into the underbelly of Victorian London.
3Guests were invited to the private view at the Charles Dickens Museum, a beautiful Victorian town house in the heart of Holborn – that was once Charles Dickens’ very own home!

We were honoured to have Marion Dickens, the great great granddaughter of Charles Dickens attend and say a few words to open the exhibition:

‘If [Dickens] were here tonight, I am certain he would feel the strongest of personal bonds with all the writers and designers and illustrators and creative people who have worked on this terrific exhibition, and its three predecessors, in his name.

News! – Dickens’ Great Great Granddaughter supports CoolTan Arts

After an exciting and busy year Cooltan Art’s project The Dickens News is nearing its final months. To complete this venture we have our final exhibition, The Underground Edition, opening at The Charles Dickens Museum London.

The Underground Edition will be officially opened next week with a private view for invited guests. This will be a thrilling occasion to hold the ultimate Dickens News exhibition inside Charles Dickens’s very own home, a beautiful Victorian town house in the heart of Holborn.

But not only do we have a special invitation to Dickens’s own house we have the added bonus of sharing our event with a member of Charles Dickens’ family!

The Dickens News: The Ragshow Edition – a review with pictures

Artist Maggi Hambling opened a special private view of The Dickens News – The Ragshow Edition, at Morley Gallery on 7 February.

Dickens_Morley15The third in a series of four art exhibitions about the life and work of Charles Dickens, it runs from 1-13 February and showcases the talents of both textile and visual artists at CoolTan Arts.

Special guests at the private view included the Mayor of Southwark, Councillor Althea Smith, who, along with CoolTan Arts’ CEO Michelle Baharier and Maggi Hambling, praised the fantastic work of the artists in the opening speeches.

dickens21Come and celebrate the festive season with CoolTan Arts at the second exhibition in our Dickens News series –‘The Winter Edition’ at Southwark Cathedral! The Dickens News is our original 4 part exhibition series and accompanying newspaper which celebrates the life and work of Charles Dickens, with a contemporary creative twist and social comment to boot! The Winter Edition exhibition explores Dickens’ creation and popularisation of Christmas traditions – etchings and lino cut prints will reveal Dickens lesser known Christmas stories and the Victorian Christmas, with Scrooge and Marley revisited in the shape of prints and drawings by CoolTan Arts participants.

The Winter Edition private view will take place on Thursday December 6th, 6-8pm.

Your chance to be a ‘Dickensian’ Journalist with CoolTan Arts and The Southwark News!

Over the coming year, CoolTan Arts will be working with a group of participants and volunteers to create The Dickens News – an original newspaper inspired by Dickens’ first novel The Pickwick Papers.
Produced and published in partnership with The Southwark News, the publication will explore Southwark’s heritage through the prism of Charles Dickens and his early life.

Experiences in Southwark inspired Dickens’ work. He spent his early years in Lant Street and his father was imprisoned for debt in Marshalsea prison. Later, a major theme in his work was social injustice and the enslavement of disadvantaged children and adults.
