An exciting exhibition with fashion show at CoolTan Arts celebrating the achievements of the Batik and Textiles class since it started in 2006 with their first major ‘RetroSpective, coinciding with the 60^th Anniversary of the Festival of Britain’.

As the Southbank Centre celebrates the 60th Anniversary of the Festival of Britain, CoolTan Arts look back over the last 6 years of their Batik and Textiles class with our first major ‘RetroSpective’. As we look back at the Festival that attempted to give Britons a feeling of recovery and progress post-war, CoolTan Arts celebrate the recovery of the mind through the arts.

The Festival of Britain was described as “a tonic for the nation” and in a time when Britain is once again embarking on a journey to financial recovery we look at the importance of adopting the ‘make do and mend’ attitude of the past. Applying these ethics to contemporary design and master craftsmanship, we will be displaying the bespoke hand dyed and crafted garments by CoolTan Arts participants.

Over the modest 6 years CoolTan Arts Batik and Textiles class has helped over 40 participants back into the community through our batik workshop. Our collections have show three-years-running on the Alternative Fashion Week’s catwalk and been on display at exhibitions from Elephant and Castle to Bethnal Green.

We invite you to view the positive effects textiles arts can have on the modern Britons of Southwark and how we ‘make do and mend’ the stigma of mental distress in our community.

Celebrate 100 years of International Women’s Day with CoolTan Arts’ Conference and new art exhibition ‘Women’s Stories’

Join CoolTan Arts Conference and celebrate  100 years of International Women’s Day and women of the last century , their narratives, personal, historical or artistic.

We will explore and celebrate the lives and works of inspirational local women from the past 100 years, and personal stories of women we know. There will be particular emphasis on stories of women from marginalised and excluded groups, including disabled women, women with mental distress and refugee women.

It will be an exciting afternoon with speakers and discussions about women and their stories, hands-on arts activities, workshops in Self-confidence and self-worth, visual arts, poetry, screening of the acclaimed film ‘In the Studio with Maggi Hambling’ and a social event for all to enjoy.

Showcasing CoolTan Arts’ new art exhibition ‘Women’s Stories’ with artwork by CoolTan artists, with powerful images including the personal, political and iconic figures, taking inspiration from art, literature and personal lives.

Entrance to the conference, film screenings and exhibition is free, but there will be a small charge for refreshments and £1 for each workshop.

Get creative, have fun, meet like-minded people and make friends. All welcome!

As part of our International Women’s Day Celebrations CoolTan Arts’ Largactyl Shuffle Walk on 19^th March will focus on women in mental health and women’s rights. Walkers meet at 12noon at the Imperial War Museum and walk to Tate Modern.

International Women’s Day is recognised by the United Nations and is celebrated by many countries across the world. It honours the social and political achievements of women since 1911. 2011 sees 100 years of International Women’s Day having been celebrated around the world.

CoolTan Arts has a new art exhibition at Oxford House Gallery, with works from participants and tutors. This multifarious array will boast
something to suit everyone’s fancy, from abstract to realist and oils to watercolours.  Examining the extraordinary, the ordinary and the imaginary through art and mind!
